Clinical Care

The clinical care environment within the Tampa Medical & Research District (TMRD) is built on a uniquely integrated model where patient care, academic medicine, and research operate in close coordination. Bringing together some of the best and brightest minds in medicine, science, biochemistry, engineering, mathematics and beyond, the TMRD features several renowned healthcare and academic institutions, including Tampa General Hospital (TGH), the University of South Florida (USF) Health Morsani College of Medicine, and others. With hundreds of active clinical trials, it is a system designed to connect discovery, validation, and delivery so new ideas can move into practice more quickly and effectively.

Clinical Strength at Scale

TMRD is defined by the breadth and scale of its clinical and research enterprise. More than 200 physician investigators are actively advancing clinical research, supported by hundreds of clinical trials spanning therapies, devices, and procedures. This work is anchored by Tampa General Hospital, a nationally recognized academic health system consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the country across multiple specialties, and complemented by USF, a Carnegie R1 research university with over $531 million in annual research activity and roughly $190 million in NIH funding. Together, these assets create a clinical environment where innovation is already underway—operating at meaningful, nationally competitive scale.

Depth of Specialties and Clinical Capability

The district offers a comprehensive range of clinical specialties and advanced care capabilities, from complex surgical procedures to leading-edge cancer treatment and precision medicine. This depth is supported by a large academic health system with extensive specialty programs, dedicated research infrastructure, and coordinated clinical trial support. In parallel, graduate medical education programs train hundreds of residents and fellows each year, strengthening both current care delivery and the future workforce. The result is an environment that combines deep expertise with the capacity to grow, meeting evolving patient needs while advancing the next generation of medicine.

A Collaborative Model for Innovation

TMRD is intentionally designed to bring together physicians, researchers, engineers, and industry partners in a highly collaborative environment focused on shared outcomes. Health systems and academic institutions work side by side on research and treatment development, while industry partners engage in co-development, testing, and commercialization within an active clinical setting. This alignment expands access to advanced diagnostics, therapies, and clinical trials while strengthening the system’s ability to improve outcomes, increase treatment effectiveness, and accelerate the adoption of innovation. Collaboration is not an aspiration—it is built into how the district operates, enabling ideas to move quickly from concept to impact.

Leading Research Ecosystem

Research within TMRD is both robust and highly integrated, creating a direct pathway from discovery to real-world application. Foundational research begins within USF’s ecosystem, supported by significant federal funding and institutional investment, and advances through clinical validation across TGH and affiliated programs. Clinical trials are embedded directly within the care setting, allowing patients to access emerging therapies while enabling researchers and industry partners to test, refine, and validate new approaches in real time. This continuous feedback loop accelerates the movement from bench to bedside, positioning the district as an efficient and impactful engine for translational research.
