Academics

Academic medicine and health sciences education are central to advancing healthcare, driving discovery, and building the workforce needed for long-term growth. The Tampa Medical & Research District (TMRD) brings these elements together in a coordinated environment where education, research, and real-world application are closely connected. At the heart of this academic ecosystem are the University of South Florida (USF) and the University of Tampa (UTampa)—each playing a distinct role. USF drives research and discovery at scale, while UTampa strengthens the workforce pipeline through highly applied education and clinical readiness. Together, they form one of the region’s most comprehensive academic health ecosystems.

This foundation is expanded by partners including Hillsborough Community College (HCC) and St. Leo University, creating a coordinated pipeline from technical training to advanced research. The result is a model that not only educates talent, but accelerates its transition into real-world healthcare, life sciences, and medtech careers.

A Complementary Academic Model

The Tampa Medical & Research District is anchored by institutions with distinct but complementary strengths, led by the University of South Florida and the University of Tampa, and supported by a broader network of academic partners including Hillsborough Community College and St. Leo University.  Together, they form a comprehensive academic ecosystem spanning research, applied education, and workforce readiness. USF brings the scale and depth of a top-tier research university, with over $600 million in annual research across health sciences,  biomedical research, engineering, and population health, supported by a large academic medical footprint and top-tier research faculty. UTampa complements this with a strong emphasis on undergraduate and graduate education, enrolling approximately 10,000 students and offering highly applied programs in nursing, biology, and health sciences. Its model prioritizes experiential learning, internships, and direct connections to local healthcare providers, preparing students for immediate entry into clinical and health-related careers.. HCC and St. Leo expand access and flexibility with HCC playing a critical role in workforce entry through nursing and technical programs, while St. Leo provides flexible options for continuing education and leadership development. Collectively, these institutions create an integrated model connecting education, research, and real-world application.

Strengthening the Talent Pipeline

The district plays a central role in aligning education with workforce needs across all levels. These institutions collectively educate tens of thousands of students annually in healthcare and life sciences, from certificates to doctoral programs. USF produces a significant share of the region’s physicians, nurses, and researchers, while UTampa and HCC lead in training entry-level nurses and allied health professionals. Students gain early exposure to clinical settings, research, and industry partnerships, enabling multiple entry points into the workforce and clear pathways for advancement. This coordinated approach strengthens talent retention and supports Tampa’s growth in healthcare and life sciences—among the region’s fastest-growing sectors.

Training the Next Generation of Healthcare Providers

The district prepares future healthcare professionals by immersing education within real patient care environments. Students across partner institutions gain hands-on experience across the full continuum of care, supported by one of the region’s most complex health systems. In addition to clinical training, students are exposed to emerging technologies, data-driven care, and evolving models such as digital health and AI. This builds both technical expertise and critical skills like collaboration and adaptability. Graduates enter the workforce better prepared to contribute immediately—strengthening patient outcomes and the long-term resilience of the region’s healthcare system.

Building a MedTech & Medical Device Talent Pipeline

The Tampa Medical & Research District supports a growing medtech sector, with Tampa ranked among the Top 25 U.S. markets for medtech employment and nearly 9,800 professionals in the talent pool. USF, UTampa, HCC, and St. Leo align to meet demand across engineering, clinical support, manufacturing, and leadership roles. The pipeline is expanding, with a 25%+ growth in degrees—feeding a regional base of 131,000+ life sciences jobs. Together, this creates a scalable pipeline supporting Tampa’s emergence as a hub for medical device innovation and manufacturing.
